Fields' Appears in Black History Month Spots (2/1/05)

Santa Monica, CA, January 31, 2005 TV Land and Nick at Nite will celebrate Black History Month throughout February by airing a series of interstitial spots entitled "Black History, Our History" beginning Tuesday, February 1. The vignettes, directed by Kim Fields (The Facts of Life, Living Single), were written and performed by Fields and poets and reflect fervently upon the history of television as it relates specifically to the black experience. The spots will air throughout the month on both networks as well as on tvland.com and nickatnite.com. In addition, the networks websites will have an original interview with Kim Fields in which she reflects upon her experience and her enthusiasm for the project.

"We are very proud of the deep and meaningful work that Kim and these talented poets brought to life for our TV Land and Nick at Nite viewers." states Larry W. Jones, President, TV Land and Nick at Nite. "Our celebration of Black History Month with this interstitial series talks to the African American experience as portrayed on television over the years in a frank, honest and thought-provoking manner."

In addition to Fields, TV Land and Nick at Nite commissioned four poets -- Beau Sia, D. Cross, Thea Monyee and Jon Goode -- to perform original poems about African American images on television. The results were poems with topics ranging from lighthearted reflections to controversial testimonies and commentary concerning the impact of African Americans on television throughout history. Areas touched upon in the performances include everything from fond memories of watching Fat Albert, The Jeffersons and Sanford and Son to the impact that television had on the Civil Rights Movement as it exposed America to the brutality of events happening in small towns which, in turn, led to national support and momentum for change. In addition to directing the series, Kim Fields also performs her own original piece which deals with growing up in front of the camera and becoming an inadvertent role model.

Kim Fields started out in show business by doing commercials and starring in the memorable ad for Mrs. Butterworths syrup. She went on to star as "Tootie" on The Facts of Life and then as "Regine" in Living Single. In addition to her notoriety as an actress, Ms. Fields is an accomplished writer, producer and director.

Kim Fields credits God for career guidance (1/12/04)

05:52 PM CST on Friday, January 9, 2004

By IRA J. HADNOT / The Dallas Morning News

Kim Fields has been spared the tortured path of some child celebrities who didn't make the transition to adult stardom successfully.

She gives God the credit for taking her from Tootie the prep school gossip in TV's The Facts of Life that aired from 1979 to 1988 to a comeback role on Living Single in 1993 as the sophisticated Regine Hunter.

And for her ability to work nearly steadily in the entertainment industry since she was 7 and beat out Janet Jackson for a role in a Mrs. Butterworth's syrup commercial.

This week, Dallas has been her temporary home base while starring in Cover Girls, an inspirational musical about the lives of four women. It is based on the book by Bishop T.D. Jakes of The Potter's House. The production opened this week at NextStage in Grand Prairie and ends Sunday before continuing to almost 30 cities across the country.

"It is a blessing that after all these years people want to see what I am doing, are interested in my life," Ms. Fields, 34, said as she breezed through a local Wal-Mart this week looking for a cell phone charger. It was just sunrise, and she had already done one television interview and was giving one on the phone. She displayed the home-girl approachability that has endeared her to many fans.

The New York native said she was saved by God at age 14 in an African Methodist Episcopal Church and that she has worked on her relationship with God ever since.

"I am not bound to a denomination, but I do take care of my spirit."

She received a bachelor's degree in communications and film with a minor in religion from Pepperdine University in 1990 and has run her own Christian production company, Victory Entertainment, since she was a college student.

"God has his hands on my life and that has been manifest by his mercy and love and the people he has placed in my life," she said. "My mom [actress Laverne "Chip" Fields] made sure that I didn't lose my mind and that I stayed grounded."

She knows that she beat the odds, considering the fate of other child stars of her generation. She escaped problems with drug addiction and depression. Her career matured.

"I was the little black girl on The Facts of Life, but I wasn't supposed to be the one to go on to do another series that would last for five years."

Or have roles in more than 40 films, television programs and guest appearances on talk and game shows. Or work as a director for Disney and Nickelodeon productions. She has won several NAACP Image Awards, as well.

"I don't seek roles that have a religious dimension," she said. "But I don't shy away from them either. It depends on the quality."

Her mother, who has worked with Bishop Jakes, and Clear Channel Entertainment, one of Cover Girls' sponsors, got her involved.

Dallas is a frequent destination for Ms. Fields. She was here last year as a narrator for the Civil Rights Movement Concert sponsored by the Black Academy of Arts and Letters. She and its founder, Curtis King, are currently working on another project. She will return within a week for a Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. program.

Ms. Fields described some of her challenges. She was in a serious car accident in 1992 that claimed the life of one of her close friends. Her marriage in 1995 to Jonathan Franklin Freeman ended in divorce three years later.

"There has been some personal stuff," she said. "I've had my wilderness period. There have been times when I have had terrific projects and then spells when I haven't. Sometimes you have to accept that the spirit is at work when you are not getting what you want. You can keep pushing, but you will wind up saying to yourself, 'God, I am glad you kept me from going there.' "

Ms. Fields knows she is frozen in time as Tootie for some of her fans. She said she is prayerful that another generation will see her as a woman who "approaches everything I do with an awareness that I am covered by God."

Lisa Whelchel Interview in Globe Magazine (9/7/03)

Article From September 9th, 2003 Globe Magazine:

FACTS OF LIFE STAR BORN AGAIN...AS A WRITER Lisa Whelchel gets heavenly help

Actress Lisa Whelchel put all her faith in when she turned her back at Hollywood at the height of her career to become a wife, mother, preacher and a best selling author. Whelchel, who played vain Blair Warner for nine years on the hit NBC sitcom, shot to fame at age 13 as a Mousketeer on The New Mickey Mouse Club. But her Christian beliefs always clashed with the indulgent Tinseltown lifestyle until she wed Steve Cauble, associate pastor at the Church of the Way in Van Nuys, Calif. "The Facts of Life ended in 1988, and I was married four months later," says Whelchel, now 40. "Then I had three children and its been fabulous. "I found my reason for life God had a purpose for me." The devoted mom homeschools her three kids Tucker, 13, Haven, 11, and Clancy, 10 and used her parenting experiences to pen three books. The first, Creative Corrections: Extraordinary Ideas for Everyday Discipline, was written after she had problems disciplining Tucker, who has been diagnosed with attention deficit disorder (ADD). "We read so many parenting books and were doing everything by the book, but Tucker wasnt cooperating, Whelchel explains. "Out of desperation, I called out to the Lord and He began to answer me every time I had a conflict with my son. Hed give me an idea."The ex-actress, who holds seminars called Mom Time Get-A-Way for mothers, doesnt believe in sparing the rod. "I think there is a good point for spanking," Whelchel insists. "It is important for kids to have a healthy fear of the Lord and their parents. "If you skip that stage of healthy fear of the parent and disciplining the flesh before you teach the heart, you need to go back and get that. "Whelchel's next two books The Facts of Life and Other Lessons My Father Taught Me and So You're Thinking About Homeschooling have also been highly successful. And talented Whelchel, whose gospel album All Because of You was a Grammy nominee in 1984, has no intention of allowing her kids to follow in her footsteps and go into show business."In my opinion, its a lose-lose situation," she blasts. "Either the child is very successful and lacks to maturity to handle the fame, stress, freedom and money not to mention where to go from being a millionaire at age 12 or they are not successful and get rejected every day with the explanation, "You are too short, too skinny or just plain not good enough." "I plan to let Haven exercise her gifts as an actress through homeschool plays, acting classes and musicals. But its too risky to introduce business into the equation." - DREW MacKENZIE

Kim Fields Working on Her New Spoken Words CD "Uninhibited." (7/24/03)

Article From July, 23rd, 2003 Los Angeles Daily News:

"Tootie, Her Own Horn"

Kim Fields predicts that fans who just can't let go of her as little Tootie from the "Facts of Life" series -- despite her long stint on "Living Single" -- will be shocked to hear her upcoming spoken word CD, "Uninhibited." "We really cover the gamut: love, sex and relationships, politics, social issues like hunger, poverty, racism and sexism," says Fields.

Not that being shocking was her aim, says the 34-year-old actress. "My lyrics may be explicit, but everything is not graphic or angry. It's like when Janet (Jackson) came out with 'Control.' Her goal wasn't to shock people. She was like: 'Look, here's where I'm at.'"

Fields -- who's featured doing her spoken word on hip-hop/jazz artist Impromp2's new "Mocha Soul" single and video (which she's also directing) -- hopes to have her own album out by Labor Day. "We've got some great artists we're working with, like jazz saxophonist Najee. I'm doing a duet with Doug E. Fresh, and we're in dialogue with Mario Winans to produce a remake of (the O'Jays) 'For The Love Of Money.'"
